A LOOK BACK
"People will not look forward to posterity who will never look backwards to their ancestors."
Edmund Burke, 1729 - 1797

Introduction
In this book I have attempted to record all I could of my family history. This is the fourth version of the book and extends the story back and fills many of the gaps. Of course this is still not a complete history and I will continue to research for a further edition. The missing reference numbers show just how much more is yet to be found.

My thanks to all those who have helped to make this book possible. With special thanks to my sisters Edna and Eva with whom I shared memories of our family. Also to my husband Bob and our son Mark, to Peter Patrick, to Doris Wood, to my cousin Stephen Best, and to Bob's cousin Eileen Symonds.

My memoirs, and Bob's, can be found at www.mooch.org.uk/serious/serious.html

1. BRIGGS / PATRICK
George Briggs was born on 24th April 1889. George's birth was entered in the Family Bible as 2nd May, and because of this he said he celebrated his birthday on both dates. He was baptised at Salem Methodist Church, Somercotes, Derbyshire, on the 5th January 1890. His father was Joseph Briggs, a colliery labourer, and his mother was Ellen Hannah, whose maiden name was Bridden (Briggs/Bridden). George was born at Seeley Terrace, Somercotes, and he lived there until his marriage.

Elsie Patrick was born on 10th August 1888. Her mother was Jane Patrick, nee Gascoyne (Patrick/Gascoyne) . Her mother registered her birth, but did not enter her husband's name as the father, or his occupation. Elsie was born at the house of William Gascoyne, her grandfather, at High Street, Somercotes, Derbyshire.

At the age of two Elsie was living with her uncle and aunt, Samuel and Edith Dooley, and their six-year-old son, Alfred. Her sister, Elizabeth, who was two years older, continued to live with her grandfather, William Gascoyne.

In her early teens Elsie worked as a domestic servant, cooking and sewing. she worked for a family named Taylor in Alfreton, and later for a family named Smedley, in Blackpool (Una remembers a visit from 'Grandma' Smedley in the 1930s ).

Elsie and George had known each other from very early childhood. They were married on 23rd December 1911 at the Baptist Chapel, Swanwick, Derbyshire. George was a coal miner. The witnesses were William Briggs, one of George's brothers, and Edith Victoria Dooley, who was Elsie's cousin. The Registrar was John J. Simpson.

Their first child was Edna Lillian, who was born on 8th July 1914, and baptised on 2nd August 1914. Eva Clarice was born on 19th October 1916, and baptised on the 20th November 1916...Their only son Harold Raymond, was born on 4th March 1920, and was baptised on 4th April 1920. Harold died of pneumonia two months later on 9th May 1920. Their fourth child was Una May who was born on 24th May 1925, and baptised on 16th July 1925. Edna was born in Askern, Yorkshire, and the other children were born at 23 Leabrooks Road, Somercotes.

When they left 23 Leabrooks Road, in 1927, they moved to 'Sunneymede', Sleetmoor Lane, Somercotes, and soon after this they moved to 46 Wilford Road, Nottingham, opposite the 'Imperial Cinema', where they owned and ran a fish and chips and, wet fish shop. In 1931 they sold the first shop and started another similar business, about half a mile away at Wilford Crescent, Nottingham.

They had now bought a newly built house, 'Wavecrest', 12 Roland Avenue, in the village of Wilford, just south of Nottingham. The river Trent overflowed its banks and flooded this house many times.

In 1952, now that all their daughters were married, and George was near retirement age, they bought a bungalow, 'Roselea', 114 George Street, Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire. On the 3rd February 1953 the North Sea broke through the sea defences and invaded a large area of the east coast, and the bungalow was badly damaged by floodwater. Elsie, who was alone at the time, was trapped by the flood. She was rescued and taken to Loath. She had to travel in wet clothes through the storm in an open top lorry. This may have contributed to her death.

George's occupation had changed over the years. At 22 was a coal miner. One mine at which he worked was Morwoods, Somercotes. He was trained as a mine manager, in Bentley, Yorkshire. He was an accomplished musician. He played, and taught others to play, the violin and piano. He played in the cinema to accompany silent films, and sometimes he played with an orchestra, or with a dance band.

In the early 1920's he was an Insurance Society manager. Later he ran the fish shops, with the assistance of his daughter Edna. About 1935 George sold the 2nd shop and became a salesman for Star Stores, Nottingham. (The Star Stores was in Lower Parliament Street, and the site was the Antibo Restaurant c2004.) By 1938 he began working as a credit-trading agent for the Nottingham Co-operative Society, and he continued in this occupation through the 2nd World War, and until his retirement.

Elsie died of heart failure and bronchitis on 28th December 1954. George died on 7th March 1964 of an aneurysm of the abdominal aorta. They both died in Mablethorpe, and were cremated at Wilford Hill Crematorium, Nottinghamshire.

Elizabeth was born at Birk's Terrace, Somercotes, Derbyshire, but all the other children were born at Seeley Terrace, Somercotes.

The family believed that Joseph was a pit-boy at Moorwood Pit, in Somercotes, at the age of 6 years. He worked all his life as a coal miner, and as a colliery banksman. In the 1891 census we have been unable to trace Jane. Zachary was now lodging with his sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Edwin Weightman, at Leabrooks Lane, Somercotes. Both sons were born in Selston, Nottinghamshire. George Peach was born in Kirkby, Notts, and was 52 years of age and he was a 'coal miner and lower underground worker'. With another man and two 14 year old workers he was ascending out of the pit at Codnor where they were employed. They arrived at the top, but one of the boys fell onto the spring, which secured the bridge tree over the pit, and this caused the bridge tree to give way, and the boy fell to the bottom of the pit, followed by Isaiah and the other man.
