The APE program was written to help children with severe specific speech and language problems. It was originally designed for our daughter Annie, following the suggestions of her school's consultant from the Institute of Education, but it may be helpful to anyone with reading and speech problems.

APE has two parts:
 - the Tester program that the pupil uses
 - the Admin program that the teacher or speech and language therapist uses

Basic layout of the APE Tester screen. The pupil using the Tester program sees a series of screens like this. There is one image and a choice of two words, or two phrases. The pupil must read and decide which of the two options is correct, and then click on that option. The program records whether the correct answer was chosen and how long the pupil took to make the choice. The pupil may do the test sequence unsupervised, or may be supervised when they are expected to read aloud both of the options.

Using the Admin program the test sequences can be created specifically for a child at their current stage of understanding. Words and phrases, and appropriate images, can be entered by the teacher or therapist. How well the child did can also be got via this admin program.
